Business & finance courses
Beginner friendlyThis leadership and management course teaches you the whole line manager's job by doing it. You'll take over a customer operations team at a UK online homeware retailer, or work with your own, and run its one-to-ones, set its goals, plan its rotas and coach its people. Then you'll rehearse the conversations you'd rather put off, from slipping performance to a resignation, until you can hold them calmly for real.
Course overview
This course walks you through a manager's job in the order it arrives: stepping into the role, one-to-ones, goals, feedback, delegation and rotas, coaching, building a fair team, wellbeing and absence, difficult conversations, performance, then joiners, leavers and change. You practise all of it on a realistic team, choosing and phrasing what you'd say before you ever have to say it for real.
By the end you can run one-to-ones your team values, give feedback that changes behaviour, delegate without hovering and handle absence and underperformance fairly, knowing exactly when to call HR. It suits first-time managers, team leaders and shift supervisors who were promoted for being good at the job. You don't need to manage anyone yet to start.

Career outcomes
Learning to manage by getting it wrong in front of your team is the hard way. Arriving with a tested 90-day plan, your own playbook and conversations you've already rehearsed shows an employer you've done the groundwork first.

If your real gap is writing, presenting or running meetings, take Business Communication instead. If you lead projects rather than people, choose Project Management. And if a management role isn't on the horizon yet, invest in the role you're in now and come back to this one later.
A course advisor will talk it through with you free, and will say so if a different course fits your goal better.
Good to know
The whole line manager's job, in the order it arrives. You step into the role, then learn one-to-ones, goals and expectations, feedback and recognition, delegation and rotas, coaching, building a fair team, wellbeing and absence, difficult conversations, performance and conduct, and joiners, leavers and change. It ends at day 45 with five problems landing at once, a revised 90-day plan, your own management playbook and two recorded conversations, one of them unseen.
Yes, if a management role is genuinely on the horizon. You do every exercise with the course's case team, so you arrive with the habits already practised. If it isn't yet, come back to this one when it is.
Not at all. The first module shows you how to reset with a team you already lead, and you can work through every exercise with your own team, anonymised, instead of the case team.
No. Excel or Google Sheets and Word or Google Docs are all you need, and the free web versions work. A free AI assistant can play the other person in your practice conversations when no colleague or friend is free.
Leadership & People Management if the job is leading a team: one-to-ones, feedback, rotas, absence and performance. Business Communication if your gap is writing, presenting, meetings and influencing people you don't manage. If you need both, Business Communication is the natural first step.
Interactive scenarios put you in realistic situations and ask you to choose and phrase your response, then show what tends to work and why. For the big conversations you rehearse out loud and record yourself, with a colleague, a friend or a free AI assistant playing the other person. They're always role-plays, never a real team member's real meeting.
It covers what a line manager has to get right: the Acas Code on discipline and grievance, fair treatment under the Equality Act, flexible working requests, absence, reasonable adjustments and family leave. It's practical guidance rather than legal advice or an HR qualification, and it shows you when to bring in HR and how to check the current rules on GOV.UK and Acas.
Yes. Pass the final assessment and you get an OBA certificate of completion that an employer can verify online. It isn't a regulated qualification such as a CMI or ILM award, or a CIPD qualification. Your 90-day plan and management playbook are the other half of the proof.
