Constantly. Rankings and period-on-period comparisons are everyday reporting work. The course covers ranking, numbering and comparing a row to its neighbours; running totals need a window frame, which it does not cover, and the notes say so and point at what to read.
The course is taught on Microsoft SQL Server, driven through SQL Server Management Studio, which is a free download for Windows. That matters: the concepts here (joins, subqueries, views, window functions) work everywhere, and some of the syntax is Microsoft-specific and will not travel unchanged to PostgreSQL or MySQL. The lesson notes flag which is which as they come up.
