Technology & AI courses
Beginner friendlyThis Tableau course teaches you to build dashboards people click to explore, and a public portfolio that shows employers what you can do. Following a UK pet supplies retailer, you'll relate data without doubling a total, choose the right chart for each question, map customers by postcode, find out who keeps coming back and publish your best work on Tableau Public.
Course overview
This course takes a UK pet supplies retailer from its first sales workbook to a dashboard its managers can click into. You'll connect and clean the data, build the core charts, write calculated fields and map UK data, then move on to table calculations, level of detail expressions and design, before a capstone of your choice on UK open data: A&E attendances, storm overflows or EV charging.
By the end you can build an interactive dashboard that answers a manager's question at a glance, check every figure against the rows behind it, and point an employer at a public profile of your work. It suits spreadsheet users who want dashboards people can explore, analysts in organisations that run on Tableau, and career changers building an analyst portfolio.

If the job ads you're looking at name Power BI, or your workplace runs on Microsoft, our Power BI course fits better. If you just need quick reports on Google data, Looker Studio is lighter. And if working with data is new to you, start with Excel for Data Analysis.
A course advisor will talk it through with you free, and will say so if a different course fits your goal better.
Good to know
It follows a UK pet supplies retailer from a first sales snapshot to a multi-page dashboard its managers can click into. You start by publishing a quick dashboard, then learn to connect, clean and relate data, choose the right chart for each question, write calculated fields and map UK data. Later modules cover filters, sets and parameters, table calculations for trends and rankings, and level of detail expressions for customer analysis, then dashboard design, interactivity, data stories and Tableau at work. A capstone on UK open data closes it.
No. The course works from spreadsheets, CSV files and Google Sheets, so you won't write SQL. If you later want to query databases yourself, our SQL course is the natural next step.
No. Tableau Public is free on Windows and Mac and covers almost everything, including every project and the capstone. The workplace lessons near the end use free trials of Tableau Desktop, Prep and Cloud, or a licence from work. Anything you publish on Tableau Public can be seen by anyone, which is why the course uses made-up and open data.
Tableau if you're on a Mac or want a public portfolio anyone can click through, Power BI if your workplace runs on Microsoft. Beyond that, check the job ads for the roles you want and learn the tool they name. Learning either makes the second far quicker.
You don't need data from work, and you shouldn't put it on Tableau Public, where everything you publish can be seen by anyone. The lessons are built around a fictional pet retailer, and the capstone runs on free UK open data, such as NHS A&E figures or Environment Agency storm overflow returns.
Yes. You need everyday spreadsheet skills such as sorting, filtering and simple formulas, and no Tableau, SQL or coding experience. If spreadsheets still feel new, start with Excel for Data Analysis.
Yes. Pass the final assessment and you get an OBA certificate of completion that an employer can verify online. It isn't one of Tableau's own certifications, and the course isn't exam prep for them. The dashboards you publish along the way are proof anyone can click through.
